NOTES ON SRP July 17, 2000 This package is a BETA test version of the AnzioWin demo, with SRP support. SRP is a security scheme developed at Stanford. Information on the protocol is available at http://srp.stanford.edu/srp IT IS ASSUMED that you have the Unix-side parts of SRP installed and tested. It is not our intent to provide free assistance with that part of the process. ============================================================================== WHAT ANZIO IS Anzio is a Windows-based telnet client. It has had wide acceptance in education, libraries, government, and industry in many parts of the world. It is unusual in its support of many character sets, for multilingual computing, and for its excellent passthrough print support. Anzio is available in two levels, as AnzioWin and Anzio Lite. It is NOT freeware, but prices are very low, especially in large volumes. More information on the released versions of Anzio, including prices, is at http://www.anzio.com Demos of the non-SRP, released versions are available there for download as well, as is a full user's manual. ============================================================================== THIS VERSION - ANZIOSRP.EXE This is a pre-release version of AnzioWin with support for SRP. To assist in that support, this version also has telnet session debugging forced on. That means that when you try (or succeed) to connect, various debug information will be displayed, scrolling up the screen. For scrollback, use Diagnose:Review (alt-R). The information displayed is similar to Unix-based telnet with "options" turned on. Also, this is a demo version. That means there is a 15-second countdown "nag" screen at startup, and also a nag line will be printed on most printed pages. Finally, this version does not have a full installer. After unZIPping it to your disk, you may want to create a Windows icon for it. Other than these differences, this is a fully functional version of AnzioWin. ============================================================================== ACTIVATING SRP Start up the program ANZIOSRP.EXE, and specify a terminal type when asked. When prompted for a host name, hit "Cancel". Go to Edit:Advanced Options:Security. At the bottom of this dialog box you will see "SRP authentication", with options of "Off", "Optional", and "Required". Set it as appropriate. Authentication refers to the process of logging in and proving who you are to the host system. You will also see "SRP encryption", with the same options. Encryption here refers to the body of your communication session after login. Note that it is possible to use secure authentication, so your login password is not transmitted as cleartext, but to use cleartext after that, for speed and lower processor load. Once these settings are established, go to Communicate:Setup to specify your target host name. ============================================================================== STAYING IN TOUCH We strongly hope that you will let us know your progress, reactions, and results of working with ANZIOSRP. Please communicate by emailing to mailto://ras@anzio.com We will maintain a private mailing list, so that we can advise you of further developments. Our plan is to have SRP rolled into AnzioWin for general release by September 1, 2000. Thanks very much. Bob Rasmussen President Rasmussen Software ras@anzio.com
