Internet Explorer 7 and Anzio

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Anzio Lite and AnzioWin can be set up as a helper application for Internet Explorer and other web browsers. This is done by registering Anzio Lite or AnzioWin as the "Default telnet client" or "Default SSH client" for Windows (see the Help menu and the "Set as default telnet/SSH..." item inside Anzio Lite or AnzioWin).

When Anzio is set as the default telnet client, Internet Explorer can be used to start the telnet session through Anzio from either a web page link pointing to the correct URL, or from the web browsers address line.

Check out our support document on Setting up Anzio as a web browser helper application for more information.

However, for understandable security reasons, with the release of Internet Explorer 7 this option for is disabled by default.

From the release notes on Internet Explorer 7:
Telnet--The Telnet protocol handler is no longer supported in Internet Explorer 7.

Resetting support for telnet help applications

You can reset the support for the telnet:// URL by making a change to a Windows registry entry for Internet Explorer.

We do not recommend doing registry changes if you have never made a change in the registry before. Please consult your PC support person.

To enable the telnet URL, do the following:

  • Add the key:
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
           Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_TELNET_PROTOCOL
  • Add this DWORD in the key:
         iexplore.exe
  • Set the value to 0
  • Close and restart all open IE7 windows
How does this affect the Secure Shell URL?

Secure Shell and the ssh:// helper application is not blocked and not disabled in any way in Internet Explorer 7. As long as you have a helper application, such as Anzio Lite or AnzioWin, set up as your default client, it still works as it did before.
